You MUST have a Home CCTV system, there is no working around having no cameras. An alarm system is good but in our many years experience we’ve found that it works best as part of a comprehensive security system with surveillance cameras as well.

Many DIY Home Security systems offer wireles security cameras such as Ring Stick Up Cam, Tapo C110, Arlo Pro, or the Eufy eufyCam. These are great stopgap measures if you don’t have the budget for a professional grade installation. We’ve found several drawbacks in our experience with these home security Wi-Fi cameras:

• Reliability of WiFi signal: often, especially at longer distances, the wifi connection can experience interruptions and really let down the live footage and recording. Especially in key moments, this is not something you want happening.
• Battery Power: many such DIY home security systems have their cameras operate on battery power. In theory they can get up to 6 months battery life, but if they have to record often, the cameras will CHEW THROUGH that battery life incredibly fast and you will find yourself recharging very often. Some try to mitigate this with a solar panel but those are extra hassle and often don’t work as well as advertised.
• Paid Subscription: many of these systems do not offer local video recording as they don’t come with a dedicated video recorder. So they charge you a monthly fee to use their online servers for storing video footage.

We mainly install wired alarm systems due to their better reliability. However, we have often installed wireless alarm systems either by customer request or due to budget concerns. Sometimes it costs $1-2k extra to install or extend an alarm system to a tricky spot, and wireless does the job for a far more reasonable cost.

Due to the existence of low budget, DIY security systems such as Arlo or Eufy, many people believe a wireless system is cheaper. 

In the professional grade, wireless systems are no cheaper because we don’t use battery powered components. So every electronic component from motion detector to camera and contact sensor have to be powered. Running power cable takes just about as much time as simply hardwiring a system from the start, meaning there is no big saving.

In 2025 security systems have gone far past your basic motion detection system. Advanced systems can now integrate contact sensors (for doors, windows, and garage doors) as well as glass break sensors and even fire/smoke detectors.
